Tiveden offers interesting nature experiences and a strong wilderness feeling in the middle of Lake Vänern and Lake Vättern's cultural settlements. Here, in one of southern Sweden's wildest forests, you can hike in chaotic boulder fields with up to 10 meter high boulders that have come with the inland ice. There are also many exciting caves and several beautiful wilderness lakes.

The unique archipelago of the Northern Vättern Archipelago Nature Reserve easily brings to mind the sea and the similarity with the Stockholm archipelago, for example. Within the reserve there are around fifty islands, which with a few exceptions have never been inhabited. Camping is only permitted in designated areas. The best way to experience the reserve is to glide along quietly in a canoe/kayak. On Grönön there are jetties and picnic areas with high accessibility.

Beautifully situated on a headland in the lake Alsen, just south of Askersund is Stjernsund Castle. The castle is considered one of Sweden's most beautiful with water on three sides and a rare well-preserved interior from the 1850s, when the royal family Bernadotte owned the castle. Interesting guided tours are given in the castle's parade floor, the servants' basement floor and the billiard wing.
